7:30 AM Sunday, August 6, 2006
Fredericton firefighters responded to the Cathedral early Sunday morning to deal with a fire situation in the bell tower which caused the sprinkler system to activate. While the blaze was quickly contained, water damage and falling embers from the blazing tower affected the choir area.
On Wednesday August 10, 2006, the Cathedral reopened to the public. All regular activities and worship services resumed as usual. The choir area remained cordoned off as repairs got underway. There remained a mild smell of smoke in the building which would last several weeks.
On Monday October 16, 2006, the Cathedral was closed to the public while full repairs and restoration work got underway. Services were held in the Cathedral Hall until December 17.
