Pewter Lamb Ornament
One of the many pewter items individually crafted by the Cathedral PewterSmiths.
|
In 1992 a group of a half dozen members of the Cathedral including Canon H.T
Drillen met with Dr. Ivan (Bill) Crowell who had suggested that if we were interested in
making pewter pieces to raise funds for the Cathedral he would teach us.
We started by finishing pieces designed by Dr. Crowell and cast for us by local
pewter shops, when they had some spare time - production was therefore sporadic. We
went on to make designs from various items found within the Cathedral such as from the
windows or the frontals on the Altar or even the Bishop's Mitre. We also make items to
order for various groups and churches.
In 1994 after Dr. Crowell realized we had the desire to continue and work at raising
funds, he offered to provide the equipment. We then had to set about learning how to cast
and finish the pewter so that this could be brought in-house. At this time the group pledged
to raise $7,500 towards the Cathedral Restoration Fund. To date (June 2000) we have
contributed a total of $43,000 - an amount beyond everyone's expectations.
Our group now numbers from 12 to 15 people who gladly give of their time and
talents to ensure that the finished product is of excellent quality and second to none.
