The word 'Advent' comes to us from the Latin adventus, meaning 'arrival'.
The Advent season is a time of preparation for the coming
of Christ - first, in His birth celebrated at Christmas and, second, in
anticipation of His second coming at the end of time. Also in this
season, we commemorate the ministry of John the Baptist and the
place of scripture in worship and life. The liturgical colours
for Advent are Blue and/or Purple.
Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas.
Traditionally, the four candles of the Advent wreath
are lit, one each Sunday, to mark
our passage through this important season.
